Chief Engineer House | Puerto de la Laja. Low Guadiana. Huelva. Spain
The "Engineer's House" comes from the rehabilitation of the home of the engineer-head of mines at Las Herrerías, located at one end of the row of houses in Puerto de la Laja. The spectacular mineral pier and the village on the banks of the Guadiana River have been declared a Site of Cultural Interest by the Junta de Andalucía. The three existing chimneys are conserved in the two rooms and kitchen of the original house and the oven in the patio, the true heart of the house. Registered in the Tourism Delegation of Huelva with the number AR / HU / 328 of 09/12/2014.
The "Engineer's House" is part of the Chapel, whose religious objects have been restored. On the main façade, the flag pole and the bell that warned of the arrival of ships to the port still remain. Almost all the rooms, except the two bathrooms and the two toilets are exterior and cross ventilation through the main facade and the three courtyards of a marked rural character.Almost all the rooms, except the two bathrooms and the two toilets are exterior and cross ventilation through the main facade and the two backyards of a marked rural character.
The house is distributed in a large living room - dining room on the main facade with fireplace, a bedroom with double bed and full bathroom inside, another bedroom with two single beds, plus the kitchen with appliances and a fireplace. Also next to the patio there is another living - dining room with closed fireplace and another kitchen. The patio communicates with another building, an old warehouse for animal equipment and is divided into a bedroom with a double bed and another bedroom with two single beds, among which there is a second complete bathroom.
Through the patio, through an exterior door, you access the Arroyo del Contrapeso and in it you will find the restored "Moorish" old kiln.
The rehabilitation is made with criteria of conservation of mining heritage. They have respected, not only the perimeter walls, the gable roof covered with Arabic tile and the holes in the walls, but also the original interior layout of the house, the two chimneys and a large part of the interior carpentry.
The spacious and generous spaces, as well as the simplicity of the materials used, the green slate of Sotiel Coronada on the floor, the coating of the wooden slat ceiling and the chosen "white" color serve as background to the few modern and antique furniture original of the house restored, according to the history of the place where it is. The absence of decoration is a deliberate choice to achieve beauty only broken by the illustrative panels of the future Baixo / Guadiana bass interpretation center.
